Stimuli & Auditory Settings

Practice with visual positions only, sound sequences only, or dual-tasking.
Select between clear spoken letters or pure synthesized musical frequencies.
Choose a voice installed on your system for letter auditory feedback.

The Dual N-Back Guide

Scientific memory enhancement, simplified. Read below to understand how the training works.

1. What is Dual N-Back?

Dual N-Back is an active cognitive training task. The player is presented with a sequence of items at set intervals. Your task is to identify when the current item is the exact same one that was presented N steps ago.

"Dual" refers to tracking two independent stimulus channels simultaneously:

  • Visual Position: A square lighting up in one of nine cells.
  • Auditory Sound: A spoken letter (e.g., "B", "L", "R") or a musical tone.

2. Understanding the "N" Level

The "N" specifies the memory offset depth. For example:

N = 1 (1-Back)

Compare the current stimulus with the immediate previous one (1 step ago).

N = 2 (2-Back)

Compare the current stimulus with the one presented two steps ago (skip one in between).

N = 3 (3-Back)

Compare the current stimulus with the one presented three steps ago (skip two in between).

3. Visual Timeline Example (2-Back)

Step 1
"B" Start
Step 2
"L" New Stimulus
Step 3
"F" Position Match! Press "A" (Visual)
Step 4
"L" Sound Match! Press "L" (Audio)

In the diagram above, Step 3 matches the grid position of Step 1 (2 steps ago). Step 4 matches the letter audio ("L") of Step 2 (2 steps ago).

4. Response & Scoring

For each interval, you can press:

  • A (or Left button) if the grid position matches the N-back position.
  • L (or Right button) if the sound matches the N-back sound.
  • Both A and L if both match simultaneously.
  • No input if neither matches.

Accuracy is calculated as:
(Hits + Correct Rejections) / Total Cues
Aim for over 85% accuracy before increasing the N-back difficulty level!
